This colorful enameled porcelain food jar painted with auspicious feng shui symbol was once a pride of a Baba-Nyonya household. The female descendants of 15^th-17^th century Chinese immigrants to the Malay archipelago and British Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore) were called Nyonya, and these women were associated with the keeping of the highly-praised porcelain wares which were oftentimes proudly displayed at special gatherings or occasions. The most common symbols included in the design of  Nyonya ware were the phoenix and the peony flower, portrayed here in this replica of lovely Nyonya ware. The phoenix represents fire, fertility and a stable rebirth. Peonies stand for love and affection, female beauty and an abundance of happiness and riches. Though Nyonya ware was once commonplace in households, today the original antique items are considered highly collectible.
